Believe it or not, beauty sleep is actually real, very effective and is one of the tenets of keeping your skin healthy and supple. Sleeping at an average of eight to nine hours every night allows your cells to get their much-needed repair. This amount of time in dreamland also gives your body enough stretch to reach the five stages of sleep which is highly beneficial for your skin. So, it’s not enough that you only sleep for five to six hours, thinking that this is only what you deserve. Not only will you feel sluggish and slow in the morning, cutting your sleep to a shorter amount of time can also compromise your immune system and might lead to skin problems, among many others.

Every stage of your sleep runs at an average of 90 minutes each and every phase of it provides benefits to your skin. During the first stages when you haven’t hit rapid eye movement just yet, your body cools itself down, which can make you lose water. To prevent your skin from drying, make sure to moisturise or use a hydrating mask to keep it from being dehydrated. Using such products regularly will also help maintain your skin’s hydration levels.

As you reach the third and fourth level of sleep, your body starts to repair the cells and stimulate hormones to produce collagen, which is an essential protein that the skin needs to keep its youthful qualities. Although collagen is constantly present in the body, ageing can slow down its production and thus, you need your body’s mechanism to boost this process. However, if you are not getting enough shut-eye every night, your body also produces immune hormones that could prevent the secretion of this much-needed protein.

Another reason why you would want to sleep longer at nights is to boost your metabolism functions. The process of metabolism can actually affect the quality of the skin, even if you think that these are two remotely different concepts. Can you remember the times when you are running on zero sleep and you start to crave for sugary food, thinking that it will give you a rush of energy? It’s not just you, but it’s actually your body’s reaction to not getting those forty winks. When your metabolic functions are intervened due to lack of sleep, it affects your glucose levels, making your body hanker for simple carbs found in unrefined sugar. Once you consume these and your body processes the simple carbs, it can result to glycation which will then lead to the breakdown of collagen, which as you know, is an essential protein for keeping the quality of your skin at its finest.

And it’s not only collagen that is beneficial for your skin that the body produces during sleep. In deep sleep, your body also secretes the growth hormone and melatonin. Human growth hormone or HGH helps prevent your skin from getting thinner while melatonin is an effective antioxidant that minimizes the amount of free radicals in your body.

There’s no denying that getting a well-rested sleep every night is one of the most powerful tools for beauty. Delegate your piles of work to tomorrow morning or ditch yet another wild night with your girl friends and opt for eight to nine hours of peaceful slumber.
